Method, regrettably
The calculator combines a baseline estimated cost with adjustments for each selector you change. All figures are approximate illustrative estimates.
What is included
Childcare, schooling, school extras, instruments, sports and hobbies, clubs and activities, family holidays, housing adjustments and university support.
What is excluded
Lost earnings from reduced working hours, the psychological cost of the school run, and every occasion you have bought a birthday present for a child you have never met.
The Soft Play Tax
We have recently introduced a specific allowance for the emotional and financial toll of attending indoor soft play areas. This accounts for £14.50 entry fees, lukewarm coffee, and staring into the middle distance while considering your life choices.
Regional adjustment
A regional multiplier is applied to the baseline and some variable costs. Multipliers are illustrative approximations based on relative cost-of-living differences across UK regions.
Sibling economies
Each additional child costs less than the first. A factor of 0.85 is applied per subsequent child to reflect shared resources, second-hand equipment and diminishing ambitions.
Lifestyle equivalents
Each lifestyle outcome has a unit cost. The calculator divides the total opportunity cost by the unit cost to produce a quantity. Outcomes that produce meaninglessly small or large quantities are filtered out of the active deck.
Key assumptions
Baseline reflects estimated food, clothing, healthcare and general care costs to age 18 for a UK child in a middle-income household.
Regional multipliers are illustrative approximations based on ONS regional price level data.
Sibling economy factor of 0.85 applied to each additional child (economies on bedroom sharing, shared activities, hand-me-downs).
Barbados cost uses a mid-range two-adult couple holiday including flights from UK, accommodation and spending money.
All figures are presented as approximate illustrative estimates and should not be treated as financial advice.
Many costs depend heavily on individual choices and market conditions. Actual costs will vary.
Lost earnings from reduced working hours are not included in these estimates.

About Baby or Barbados
Built for domestic debates, not life decisions. This is a joke-first financial calculator intended to entertain, not advise. It is particularly well-suited to hypothetical conversations about children, ideally shared with someone who has recently asked a leading question.
Frequently asked questions
Is this financial advice?
No. This is a joke calculator. The figures are illustrative estimates, not actuarial projections. Please do not make major life decisions based on a website called Baby or Barbados.
Are the figures exact?
They are not. The cost of raising a child varies enormously depending on choices, location, circumstances and what year your child decides they absolutely must do competitive equestrian. Treat every number as a rough order of magnitude.
Does this include lost earnings?
No. Accounting for reduced working hours, career breaks and the economic impact of school runs would make the figures considerably worse. We felt that was unnecessary.
Can I select more than one child?
Yes. The child count selector goes up to four or more. A sibling economy factor is applied: subsequent children cost somewhat less than the first, because of hand-me-downs, shared bedrooms and the general collapse of your ambitions.
Why Barbados?
Barbados is the canonical British aspirational holiday. It is expensive enough to be a meaningful comparison, specific enough to be funny, and warm enough to be genuinely appealing in February. It is also not Barbados's fault that any of this happened.
Are you saying people should not have children?
Absolutely not. This calculator is built for hypothetical conversations and domestic banter, not parenting advice. Children are marvellous. Expensive, but marvellous.
Can I share my result?
Yes. The share button generates a link that recreates your exact selection. You can also download a result card for WhatsApp, Instagram or the family group chat.
How often are the assumptions updated?
We aim to review the core cost assumptions annually. The last review date is shown in the methodology section. If you notice a figure that seems significantly out of date, please do get in touch.
